Proof of the importance of Gubbio in Roman times is still clearly visible to us today both from elements such as the Gubbio Tablets and from the presence of imposing monuments such as the amphitheatre and the mausoleum.
The city’s period of greatest splendour is clearly apparent in the grandiose buildings of Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo dei Consoli, considered one of the finest expressions of Medieval city architecture in Italy.

Three main roads lead from Gubbio to Perugia, Umbertide and Gualdo Tadino past perfectly preserved castles and abbeys, some of which have been made into top hotels. 
A unique event in its kind, the Ceri race involves the entire population of Gubbio and attracts tourists from all over Italy. It takes place on the eve of the death of St Ubaldo, on May 15th. The Ceri are carried in a hectic race from Piazza della Signoria to the basilica of Sant'Ubaldo at 827 metres above sea level. 
The many events organised in Gubbio all year round make this city a popular weekend destination. The Ceri race is a must. At Christmas the city hoists up the largest Christmas Tree in the world... 
The Palio della Balestra is one of the most important events organised in Gubbio for the celebrations of the city's patron saint Ubaldo. The Palio consists of a contest using the ancient fixed crossbow and is held in Piazza Grande on the last Sunday of May.
