2, 3 e 4 OCTOBER, Feast of San Francesco of Assisi. National celebration in honour of Saint Francis, the Patron Saint of Italy - Religious services in the Basilica of San Francesco and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Civic ceremonies presided aver by a representative of the italian Government and the highest regional, provincial and municipal authorities of the region which, according to a pre-arranged sequence, represents all of Italy by offering oil to fuel the votive lamp of the towns of Italy which burns before the tomb of Saint Francis. Assisi (Pg). With the aim of safeguarding the historic embroidery tradition in Umbria, the Accademia Punto Assisi embroidery academy in Via Metastasio 18 will be running Assisi point and Catherine de' Medici point classes from September through to June. 
A holy city surrounded by verdant countryside, Assisi is filled with a special spirituality that makes every corner exciting, leaving visitors enchanted with its silent majesty. Priceless works of art are kept within the basilicas of this city that has been attracting pilgrims for centuries, making it the most important spiritual centre for Roman Catholicism after St Peter's in Rome. 
The "Porziuncola" chapel where St Francis founded the order of Lesser Friars, and the "Cappella del Transito" where St Francis died on October 4th 1226. At the far end of the basilica is the "Thornless Rose Garden and the "Cappella del Roseto".
Visit to the Basilica of St Francis, made up of two different churches placed one above the other. Very different in style and atmosphere, the Lower Basilica has been influenced by the spirit of poverty preached by the Franciscan order, while the lofty Upper Basilica is in a sophisticated gothic style.
Via San Francesco runs directly from the basilica to Piazza del Comune and deserves a slow stroll to fully take in the architectural beauty and special atmosphere of this magical city.
The abundance of monuments in Assisi makes this city one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations. Centuries of history have left a precious heritage made up of churches, palazzi and castles. 
Conveniently located near the E45 Terni-Perugia-Cesena highway, Assisi can be reached easily by car. The city is also well-connected by rail. 
This large church is dedicated to St Claire, a disciple of St Francis and founder of the Order of St Claire. The delicate architecture of this building is characterised by the use of alternate pink and white stone in the exterior.
