National celebration in honour of Saint Francis, the Patron Saint of Italy - Religious services in the Basilica of San Francesco and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Civic ceremonies presided aver by a representative of the italian Government and the highest regional, provincial and municipal authorities of the region which, according to a pre-arranged sequence, represents all of Italy by offering oil to fuel the votive lamp of the towns of Italy which burns before the tomb of Saint Francis. A holy city surrounded by verdant countryside, Assisi is filled with a special spirituality that makes every corner exciting, leaving visitors enchanted with its silent majesty. The "Porziuncola" chapel where St Francis founded the order of Lesser Friars, and the "Cappella del Transito" where St Francis died on October 4th 1226. At the far end of the basilica is the "Thornless Rose Garden and the "Cappella del Roseto".
